dinosaur hunt

dinosaur-hunt-party ideaSend your dinosaur party guests on a hunt for toy dinosaurs, dinosaur bones and/or dinosaur eggs.  We hid some toy dinosaurs, some dinosaur filled eggs that we purchased online, and some dinosaur eggs that we had made ourselves.  You could also use bone shaped dog biscuits or cut bones out of cardboard.  We had the guests collect all the items and place the toys and eggs on a tray, so that they could be shared out.  You can place a mark on one or two of the bones, and award a small prize to the child that finds the “special” dinosaur bone.

sack races

sack-racesSack races are an oldie but a goodie!  And don’t despair if you don’t have a pile of hessian sacks lying around - you can use the eco fabric shopping bags as an alternative.  The kids can climb into the bags and hold onto the handles, or you can cut the base off of a bag and sew it to the top of another.  Much cheaper than making them from scratch.

Hold sack races as a stand alone game, or use the sacks to tie in with other games.  For example, at the dinosaur party, I read a letter to the kids telling them we needed to go on a dinosaur hunt, but the only way to get there was with “dino” sacks.  The kids were only too keen to climb into the sacks and jump their way to the imaginary destination!  This is a good way to eliminate the winning/losing scenario that younger kids don’t always deal with too well!

Sacks can even become cocoons for a butterfly party or mermaid tails for a mermaid party!

dinosaur chalk party favour

dinosaur-chalkJumbo chalk is a great budget friendly party favour for any party, but its big size lends itself well to a dinosaur party!  I grabbed a tub of chalk for $3, and wrapped two pieces together with our printable dinosaur chalk wrapper.  Just beware - the kids will quickly pull them out of their goodie bags and you’ll have chalk dinosaurs all over your driveway or the side of the house!

dinosaur straw decorations

dinosaur-straw-decorationsThe kids have a lot of fun watching the dinosaurs “drink” with these dinosaur straw decorations.  Use them on the party table, and create extras so the kids can take them home as party favours.

Simply use our printable Dinsoaur Straw Decoration, cut around each dinosaur and use a stanley knife to make a slit in the mouth.  Slide each dinosaur onto a straw, and secure with a piece of sticky tape.  Dinomite!

Note: I laminated these, but you could also print on photo paper.

dinosaur sandwiches

dinosaur-sandwichesKids love to have their favourite foods served up in novel ways.  We incorporated Vegemite sandwiches into a dinosaur party theme simply by cutting them out with a dinosaur biscuit cutter.

volcano cake

volcano-cakeJulianne made this wonderful volcano cake for a dinosaur party last weekend.  She simply used a dolly varden tin to bake a moist cake, smothered it in chocolate fudge icing and placed sparklers in the top.  She added a few drops of green food colouring to some shredded coconut, and scattered it around the base.  The rocks are actually violet crumble pieces.  She then added some dinosaurs and plastic plants.  Naturally, it was a BIG hit with the kids.

Note:  You can actually buy sparklers in numerical shapes that would be a great addition to this cake!

dinosaur eggs

dinosaur-eggs2

Little palaeontologists will find a dinosaur inside these dinosaur eggs when they tap them with a hammer to split them apart or immerse them in water to rub the sand away. You can use the dinosaur eggs in a dinosaur egg hunt or as a dinosaur party favour (include a dinosaur egg in each goodie bag (put one in a ziplock bag, with instructions to tap them with a hammer or immerse in water to find the dinosaur inside)).

how to make dinosaur eggs

materials

  • 2 cups clean sand
  • 1 cup flour
  • food dye
  • 1/2 cup water
  • small toy dinosaurs
  • tray
  • baking paper

instructions

Mix sand and flour together. Place a few drops of food dye into the water, stir, then add it to the sand mixture. Mix until all of the sand is moistened and the mixture forms a very stiff dough (add a little more water, one teaspoon at time, if required). Grab a handful of sand dough and flatten it in the palm of your hand. Place a toy dinosaur in the middle of the dough. Carefully mould the dough completely around the toy, forming an egg shape. Line the tray with baking paper. Place the ”eggs” on the tray. Let them dry and harden in a sunny place for a minimum of 2 days.
Note:  The number of eggs you make from the above amounts will depend on the size of the toys you need to cover, and how big you want the eggs to be.  I managed to make 10 eggs.  I also sped up the drying process by sitting them in front of a blow heater.

dinosaur water bottle labels

dino-water21This is a fun idea for your dinosaur party.  Kids love to have their names on things, and they will often want to take their bottle home with them.  Purchase some small water bottles and, if necessary, remove the labels.  Use our printable dinosaur water bottle labels, cut them out, and then write each child’s name with a permanenet marker on a label.  Wrap around each bottle, gluing the ends of the label together.

dinosaur crossing sign

dinosaur-crossing-sign-photoHere’s a dino-mite idea to get the kids in the mood for your dinosaur party.  Print our printable Dinosaur Crossing Sign onto card, cut out and attach to a small stake (a chopstick or wooden spoon works well, too!).  I actually printed this on paper and laminated it  - which was just as well, as there was a bit of rain before the party!  Pop the sign next to the path leading to the entrance of the party.  Place our dinosaur footprints next to the sign for added excitement.
