frog pond cake

frog-pond-cake party ideaI helped Tara decorate this “toadally” cute cake for Samuel’s first birthday frog  party.  To make it, bake or buy a round cake of your choice, then ice the cake in blue buttercream icing.  Tint some royal icing with blue food colouring, then roll into different sized pebbles, and place around the base of the cake.  Tint some royal icing with green food colouring, then flatten with a rolling pin.  Use different sized glasses to cut three circles for the lily pads.  Cut a narrow wedge from each circle, then place the lily pads onto the cake.  The bullrushes were made from pretzel sticks dipped into melted chocolate, and the reeds were slivers of confectionery spearmint leaves.  The frog eyes peeping from the pond were made from two green mini m&ms with a small piece of royal icing presssed onto them, and then I used black writing icing to draw the pupil on.  I moulded a water  lily from royal icing, and placed a yellow mini m&m into the middle.  We added these cute frog picks that Tara had found, but you could use any toy frogs or mould some out of royal icing.

“ballfrog” pond

frog in the pond

frog-in-the-pond-compressed-copyFrog in the Pond is a popular treat at Australian birthday parties, and is perfect for a frog party.  To make 12 frogs in the pond, you will need:

  • 3 x 85g packet of blue or green jelly crystals
  • 12 clear plastic cups
  • 12 chocolate frogs

Make the jelly according to the instructions on the box.

Pour the desired amount into each plastic cup and place into the fridge to set.

Before the jelly is completely set, place a frog vertically into the jelly and return to the fridge.  Have teaspoons on hand when serving.

It can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored covered in the fridge.

Alternatives:

  • Instead of having the frog sticking out of the “pond” you can place it horizontally so that it is swimming in the pond.  Pour half of the jelly into the plastic cups, and put into the fridge to set.  Place a frog on top of the jelly, then top up the cup with the remaining jelly.  Place it into the fridge to set.
  • You can add reeds made from sliced spearmint leaves.

easy frog cupcakes

frog-cupcakes-compressed-copyThese little frog cakes are so easy to make that you could even have the kids decorate them during the party (just have one frog cake created so they know what the cake should look like).  Use cupcakes of your choice and ice with green butter cream.  Cut a marshmallow in halves for the eyes, and then use a tube of black writing icing to add the centre of the eye.  We cut a thin strip from a licorice strap for the mouth, but you could always use writing icing.  The tongue was drawn on with red writing icing, or alternatively, use a red skittle or mini m&m.
