princess sceptre
The guests at Tilly’s princess party all had a chance to hold this sceptre at their “coronation”, and posed with it for the “royal photographer”. I made it by wrapping aluminum foil around a chopstick, then pushing the chopstick into a christmas ornament. If you can’t find a suitable ornament, you can glue glitter and fake jewels to a styrofoam ball (or any shape you like).
Making a prince/princess sceptre could also be an activity for your prince/princess party - supply some pieces of dowel, styrofoam balls or christmas ornaments, ribbons, paint, glue, glitter and stick on jewels, and let the guests create their royal masterpiece.
nail polish party favours
Any little girl will be excited to find nail polish in their party bag. You can add it to all sorts of themes, from princess and mermaid parties to circus and movie parties. I found these small bottles in a pack of seven, which made them very affordable - about $1 each. I also included a coloured nail file, which you can get in bulk from a variety store.
Alternatively, use these as prizes or even make an activity out of painting guests’ nails.
necklaces
Making necklaces can be a fun activity as guests arrive, or you can add them to the party bags. For this mermaid party we picked up an assortment of beads including shells and rocks. We used stretchy nylon (which you can pick up from a craft or variety store) to make it easy for the kids to thread and simple to tie together without the need for fixings. Guests were invited to make a necklace as they arrived and while they were waiting for other guests.
Another idea is to create small necklace making kits for goodie bags. Put some beads in a bag or jar and cut some necklace string. The kids can enjoy the activity at home. If you have an assortment of buttons accumulating in your cupboard add these to thread - buttons make gorgeous necklaces and add wonderful character.
princess throne
Create a royal ambience for your princess party by providing a royal throne! Find a suitable chair and decorate with ribbon, a cushion, fabric, jewellery or pretend jewels - or cut a throne shape from some cardboard, decorate before attaching to the back of a chair.
You can use the throne during the party for:
- present opening. Have the birthday child sit on the throne, with the other guests in a semi circle on the floor in front of the “throne”. Each guest can take turns to present their gift to the birthday child, and the birthday child can use their best royal manners to thank the guest before opening the gift
- photo opportunities - encourage each child to sit on the throne so you can take a photo, or have guests take royal potraits of each other
- a coronation
- demonstrating princess etiquette, such as how to eat cake, how to sit like a princess, or how to smile like a princess
crown sandwiches
Crown sandwiches are great for a royal picnic or prince or princess party. We made jam sandwiches and some vegemite sandwiches, then used a large crown shaped biscuit cutter to cut a crown shaped sandwich. We added some “jewels” to the crown by squeezing a dot of pink gel icing from a tube onto the sandwich. Simple food, but one of the first to go!
framed happy birthday sign
This is a simple but sweet idea for any party. Print out a sign with the words “Happy Birthday (Child’s Name)” (when appropriate, preface their name with Princess/Pirate/Mermaid/etc). Slip the sign into a suitable frame and sit it on the party table. Depending on the the amount of room you have, you could include two other frames - one with a photo of the birthday child, and one with the age of the child.
easy prince and princess cake
Not everybody is great at making cakes and a lot of us don’t have time. Here’s an easy (and cheap) one for a prince or princess party that still looks great.
Buy a cake at your local supermarket. I find you can’t really go wrong with their mudcakes - always moist and tasty. Buy icing ‘Happy Birthday’ lettering to place in a semi-circle on the cake. Then, using silver or gold card, cut and staple together a small crown to go in the centre of your cake. Good enough for royalty!
