teddy bear faces
This is face painting anyone can do, and this simple idea makes young kids feel ‘beary’ special. Use a black face paint pen (or soft black eyeliner) to draw this simple teddy bear nose and mouth on guests as they arrive for your teddy bears’ picnic party. They will then be ready to dance to teddy bear tunes, or to march in a teddy bear parade. Don’t forget to snap a photo of each child, and send it as a thank-you to guests after the party.
teddy bear marshmallow biscuits
These are simple and delicious treats to make for your Teddy Bears’ Picnic party. Purchase some milk chocolate marshmallow biscuits (I used Arnott’s Milk Choc Royals) and some milk chocolate buttons (I used Cadbury’s Chocolate Buttons). Boil your kettle to make the sides of it warm and simply rub your milk button on the side to slightly melt the ears before sticking on the biscuits. Use a white fudge icing pen to draw the whites of the eyes, then use a chocolate fudge writing pen to add dots to the eyes and the inner ears, then draw the nose and mouth. Bearry yummy!

sack races
Sack races are an oldie but a goodie! And don’t despair if you don’t have a pile of hessian sacks lying around - you can use the eco fabric shopping bags as an alternative. The kids can climb into the bags and hold onto the handles, or you can cut the base off of a bag and sew it to the top of another. Much cheaper than making them from scratch.
Hold sack races as a stand alone game, or use the sacks to tie in with other games. For example, at the dinosaur party, I read a letter to the kids telling them we needed to go on a dinosaur hunt, but the only way to get there was with “dino” sacks. The kids were only too keen to climb into the sacks and jump their way to the imaginary destination! This is a good way to eliminate the winning/losing scenario that younger kids don’t always deal with too well!
Sacks can even become cocoons for a butterfly party or mermaid tails for a mermaid party!
teddy bears’ picnic scene
Set the scene for your Teddy Bears’ Picnic party by laying a checked tablecloth or rug on the ground, placing some plates and plastic food on it and then sitting a few bears wearing party hats around it. Add a picnic basket, a potplant, or some little plastic ants… use whatever you already have around the house! I did this for my daughter’s second birthday, and the kids also had fun playing with and feeding the teddies. It’s little touches like this that the kids love!
gingerbread characters
I had almost forgotten how tasty gingerbread is - and how much fun gingerbread men are to decorate! You can have the kids at the party decorate their own characters or simply serve them up as tasty treats.
Add them to your theme - circus clowns, pirates, fairies, etc. and decorate to suit.
Ingredients:
- 125g butter
- 100g brown sugar
- 125ml golden syrup
- 1 egg, separated
- 375g plain flour
- 1 tbs ground ginger
- 1 tsp mixed spice
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 150g icing sugar
- food colouring
- mini m&ms
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 180°C and grease baking trays.
Cream butter and sugar. Add golden syrup and egg yolk and mix well. Stir in flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.
Meanwhile, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add icing sugar and beat until peaks stiffen. Divide into bowls and add food colouring as required.
Roll out dough to approximately 4mm thick and cut out gingerbread men shapes. Place on trays and bake for approximately 10 minutes or until brown. Transfer to a rack to cool.
Place prepared icings in zip lock bags (this stops mess, especially if kids are icing!). Cut a small hole in a corner of each bag.
Have fun decorating with icing and mini m&ms!
tiny teddy cars
These nifty Tiny Teddy cars are as much fun to make as they are to eat. And they are so easy that my nearly 3 year old daughter made a little batch all by herself. All you need is a bag of mini Milky Way Bars, a packet of Tiny Teddy biscuits, a bag of chocolate beanies (I used Smarties - the colours are more vibrant than some generic brands), and a handful of chocolate melts. Melt the chocolate melts in a bowl. Holding a Milky Way by its side, gently press a tiny teddy into the bar. Use a toothpick or skewer to place the melted chocolate onto a beanie, and then stick 4 beanies onto the side of the Milky Way. Simple - and they can be made days ahead!!

easy teddy bear cake
This truly is easy. Perfect for those of us that aren’t confident with cake decorating!
Bake or buy a 20cm round cake. Place a round bowl or plate upside-down on the cake in the area where the teddy mouth and nose will be, to protect the area from chocolate icing. Spread chocolate icing over the exposed areas of the cake - top and side of cake. Cut a marshmallow in half to give two circles. Press them onto cake to form the eyes. Place a Smartie on each marshmallow. Press Coco Pops onto the remaining chocolate icing. Remove the plate or bowl, and carefully spread plain icing onto the cake. Cut out a triangle of licorice strap and position as nose. Cut licorice strap into 2 long, thin strips and position as mouth. Press Rice Bubbles onto the plain icing. Place Wagon Wheels to represent the ears (use a marshmallow behind each ear to raise the ear higher).
biscuit decorating
Sometimes it is more suitable to have activity stations than always to play structured games, and kids will love decorating biscuits in the theme of the party.
Make some plain biscuits using cookie cutters (e.g. butterfly, teddy bear, animal). Make butter or glace icing using various food colours. Have a selection of lollies, chocolate chips and sprinkles for the children to decorate their biscuits. If the children are older give a prize to the best decorated biscuit.
A delicious birthday party idea!
